Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture Holds its 31st Convocation

Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture Celebrates its 31st Convocation Ceremony  with its largest graduating batch yet

With a total of 181 undergraduate students and 3 students from the M.Phil in Art and Design program, this year marks the institution's largest graduating batch. Degrees will be awarded to 19 students in Architecture, 23 in Interior Design, 24 in Fine Art, 61 in Communication Design, 40 in Textile Design, and 14 in Fashion Design.

The convocation ceremony began with a warm welcome from Dean and Executive Director Dr. Faiza Mushtaq. In her address, she celebrated the remarkable achievements of IVS alumni and faculty over the past year. These include the prestigious Kausar Bashir Awards won at the Institute of Architects, Pakistan (IAP), and the groundbreaking curatorial work of alumna and faculty member Zarmeene Shah, who curated the acclaimed exhibition Manzar: Art and Architecture from Pakistan 1940s to Today at the Qatar National Museum in Doha.

The keynote address by art historian and author Mr. Fakhir Syed Aijazuddin emphasized the significance of embracing a multifaceted approach to life and career. Reflecting on his journey from a Chartered Accountant to an esteemed art historian, he highlighted how duality fosters creativity and humanity. Drawing from personal anecdotes, including his work cataloging miniature paintings at the Lahore Museum, Mr. Aijazuddin encouraged graduates to value resilience, seize opportunities, and remain steadfast amidst challenges. He also lauded the institution for its commitment to excellence, recalling the meticulous relocation of the Nusserwanjee building as a testament to preserving heritage.

In his speech, Mr. Aijazuddin underscored the importance of patriotism, urging graduates to contribute positively to Pakistan’s growth while cherishing their cultural heritage. He praised the IVS's progressive environment, celebrating its gender-inclusive ethos and the achievements of its predominantly female graduating class. Concluding with advice to pursue careers passionately while upholding humanity, he invoked the words of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, calling for women to play a central role in national progress. His closing message resonated with optimism and a call to action, reminding graduates that their talents are vital to shaping the future of the nation.

The ceremony concluded with insightful remarks from the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. Zubyr Soomro, who lauded the exceptional talent showcased by the graduating students during the Degree Show 2024. He commended the impactful projects that courageously addressed pressing social, political, and environmental challenges facing the country, emphasizing the critical need for greater investment in creative professionals.

The convocation was graced by dignitaries, esteemed well-wishers of the institution, and proud families of the graduating class, making it a truly memorable celebration of achievement and innovation.
