Theatrical Performance Directed by Ellen Kaplan

Students from IVS Performed Short Stories by Ismat Chughtai

The performance concluded the a theater residency at the School led by US-based Fulbright Specialist, playwright and director, Ms. Ellen Kaplan.

 

IVS invited Professor Emerita Ellen Kaplan from the Smith College to conduct a theatre residency with its students. Under Kaplan’s guidance, students composed plays based on five short stories written by Ismat Chughtai. The stories included Sacred Duty, The Rock, The Morsel, The Veil and The Quilt that were performed at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) on the 18th of February, 2024, 7PM.

Ellen Kaplan is well-known for her groundbreaking work in using theater for healing. With a strong theatre background, Kaplan combines art and therapy to help people grow emotionally. Her creative methods use drama to assist in personal development and healing. Kaplan's work in drama therapy has had a big impact, providing fresh ways for people to deal with their inner issues. Her research shows how art can greatly improve mental health, bringing optimism and strength to diverse communities

Through the theatre residency, IVS sought to provide its students with hands-on experience with the full scope of making a play while introducing them to the works of Ismat Chughtai. Over the four-week residency, Kaplan engaged students with workshops in public speaking, techniques for projection and articulation.
